Carolynn Welch (she/her)
Executive Director
Carolynn was born and raised in Buffalo and has enjoyed watching it become an even better place to live over the years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from D’Youville University. Carolynn has worked at WEDI since 2017 and was appointed executive director in 2019. Prior to WEDI, she worked at various nonprofits for 20+ years in areas including program management, development, compliance, and administration. In September 2022, Carolynn received the Delta Sigma Alumni Award from D'Youville University. In her free time she enjoys reading. She lives in Hamburg with her three children.

Courtney has lived in Buffalo since 2016 and considers herself a Buffalonian. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in English and Anthropology from SUNY Geneseo. Carrie moved to Buffalo when she was 9 years old and returned to the area after she received her bachelor’s in government from Smith College in Massachusetts. She earned her master’s in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo. She has worked at other local nonprofits (YMCA and Community Services for Every1) and was the owner of East Meets West Yoga. She now is the owner of New Moon Mindful Movement. Carrie lives on West Side with her partner, and their two dogs and two cats and she enjoys taking them on adventures in the Buffalo area and going on road trips.

Cody Clement-Sanders
Director of Operations
Cody has lived in Buffalo since 2011. He holds multiple degrees from the University at Buffalo including a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design with a minor in Geography and a Masters of Urban Planning with dual specializations in Neighborhood Planning and Community Development and Economic Development and International Planning. Prior to working at WEDI, Cody interned for Joule Assets. He serves on the board of the King Urban Life Center where he is the chair of the Restoration and Facilities Committees. In his free time he enjoys playing video games and ultimate frisbee, hiking, working on cars, and tinkering away at greasy mechanical projects. Cody was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in June 2021.

Francesca has lived in the Western New York region for 14 years. She is a graduate of the University at Buffalo where she received her bachelor’s degree in environmental design. Prior to joining WEDI, she interned at the Town of Clarence and for Assemblyman Jon Rivera’s office. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, spending time with loved ones, going outdoors, and staying active.

He graduated from the University at Buffalo in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science, specializing in public administration and international relations. Before joining WEDI, he interned at the Erie County Executive’s office, where he researched issue areas and provided support for County objectives. He currently lives in Tonawanda, and enjoys being with his family, cooking and reading. Lou was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in February and August of 2024.

Diane was born in the coastal area of Northeast Brazil, and moved to Western New York in 2022 as her husband is from Buffalo. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the College of Ipojuca and MBA in Financial Management and Banking from Uninassau. Diane has a decade of experience in the financial sector and most recently, she was a managing partner for a bank correspondent specializing in personal loans. In her spare time, she enjoys crafting and currently she is learning how to make jewelry and keychains using resin. She also loves coffee and baking Brazilian desserts. She resides in Tonawanda with her husband and their orange cat. Diane was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in September 2024.

Purnima has lived in Buffalo for 15 years. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Food & Fermentation Technology from the University of Mumbai, India. Prior to WEDI, she worked for Rich Products and Coca Cola India. Purnima has volunteered with numerous nonprofits and serves as the co-president of her PTSA Council. In her free time she enjoys arts and crafts, singing, dancing, cooking, photography, and volunteering. She lives in Amherst with her husband and son. Purnima was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in January 2022. and September 2023

Sreeja's journey to Western New York began with a visit to Niagara Falls and a few years later, she returned to the area to pursue her undergraduate studies at SUNY University at Buffalo where she received he bachelor’s in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics. Prior to joining WEDI, she worked as financial analysis intern at Ram International and as a finance student assistant at the University of Buffalo’s Chief Information Officer department. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, working out, and reading the news.

Connection to WEDI’s mission: “My connection to WEDI’s mission stems from my academic training in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, which highlighted the stark realities of economic disparities. Growing up in a diverse community, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of economic inequities on individuals and families. Supporting WEDI’s mission is important to me because it aligns with my belief in creating fair and inclusive opportunities for all residents of Western NY to achieve economic stability and success. It's fulfilling to apply my knowledge towards creating positive change.”

Katrina was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She has a bachelor’s degree in Finance and an associate’s degree in Accounting from the University of the Pacific. With over 15 years of experience in financial institutions and credit unions, Katrina brings extensive knowledge working with internal and external customers to provide lending and financial services. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, working out, and focuses on self-care and self-improvement. Kat was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in July 2024.

Esperance moved to Buffalo as a refugee in 2005 and considers it her home. She holds an associate degree in Business Administration from Erie Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Medaille College, and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Buffalo State College. Prior to working at WEDI, Esperance provided services to people with mental health issues and their families. In her free time she enjoys traveling and spending time with family. She lives with her husband and four children. Esperance was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in May 2022.

While Kat was born and raised in Chautauqua County, she considers Buffalo her home city as her mother’s family goes back generations on Buffalo’s East Side. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. Kat brings a wealth of business, economic development and equity experience to WEDI from her previous roles at startups like G5, Squire Technologies, Memory Fox, and Braidbabes; as well as from her current roles as Executive Director of Buffalo Startup Week, a Director of the non-profit BootSector, as the founder of Better Together, a local antiracist discussion group dedicated to proactively doing the work needed to expand cultural competency personally and professionally; and numerous mentorship and coaching roles in local entrepreneurial education programs. In her free time, she likes to read, garden, DIY her home, hike, and ski. Kat was named WEDI's Employee of the month in April 2024.

Matthew Haberstro
Business Incubation Assistant Manager
Matthew moved to Buffalo when he was 10 years old with his family, who were originally from the area. He has his bachelor’s degree in business administration and MBA from University at Buffalo. Prior to WEDI, he was the Vice President of Times and Seasons, a not-for-profit that specializes in Disaster and Humanitarian Relief. A self-proclaimed nerd, Matthew enjoys listening to music, tinkering in his workshop, and traveling abroad. He also has a bird named Tesla.

Matthew moved to Buffalo when he was 10 years old with his family, who were originally from the area. He has his bachelor’s degree in business administration and MBA from University at Buffalo. Prior to WEDI, he was the Vice President of Times and Seasons, a not-for-profit that specializes in Disaster and Humanitarian Relief. A self-proclaimed nerd, Matthew enjoys listening to music, tinkering in his workshop, and traveling abroad. He also has a bird named Tesla.

Maggie Rapp (she/her)
Operations Manager
Maggie was born and raised in Hamburg, NY. She graduated from SUNY Geneseo with bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and Geography. After graduating from college, she worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA for Grassroots Gardens WNY. Maggie also worked as a farm manager at 5 Loaves Farm and as Operations Director at a small native landscaping company prior to joining WEDI. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, being outside, and hanging out with her baby boy.

Donata Uzamukunda
Downtown Bazaar Assistant
Donata is originally from Rwanda and came to the United States in 2015. Back in her country, she worked as a retail food business owner for 15 years. Donata started a business when she was 17 years old. Her business was successful and expended until she came to the United States. Donata is working at West Side Bazaar as Assistant Manager and enjoys working closely with small businesses and clients every day.
